ABCs Of Me

Haven’t Posted In A While

Good things have happened, but it’s the bad things that make them seem inconsequential.  There was a horrific hit-and-run by my house on Friday night and all I knew about it was that it rerouted traffic while I was trying to get to work on Saturday morning.    I watched the news Saturday night and found out two women were killed when they were side-swiped by an intoxicated driver (one was trying to assist the passenger in the car).  On Sunday I found out that the Good Samaritan was an acquaintance of mine.  She taught my boot camp class last spring and I was facebook friends with her.  We were not at all close, but it really made the accident more real to me.  She was my age (30), had a husband and 4 kids, and was just a beautiful person.  I’ve been questioning a lot of things right now and posting just hasn’t been at the top of my list.

CRAP!

And not as defined by the SUAR dictionary…

I just looked at the BMO Vancouver Marathon site and discovered that I have ONE HUNDRED days until my second marathon!  My printed out 4 page calendar schedule made it seem so far away.  Now I kind of want to bang my head on the desk and ask myself why I’m putting myself through this again.  Oh yeah, because I actually do love running that far!  Who woulda thought?

Mostly Wordless Wednesday

To begin let me say that you can see me on skinnyrunner.com today as her Cat Lady Blogger!  Again, a big hip, hip, hooray for self-promotion.  It’ll get you everywhere in the blogosphere!  It’s so much easier to be extroverted on the internet… if you knew me you’d know that I’m pretty introverted in real life.

If you like my blog, please become a follower!  I’d love to have 100 followers for my 100th post tomorrow!  Lurkers, that means you… time to let me know you’re here.

Now to the photos:

It’s snowing!  Turn off flash…

Colin post-1 hour/10km run.  It wasn’t snowing when he left.  So not impressed that I took his picture.

That’s what it looked like after he came home!

I Am A Runner – Video

Can’t for the life of me figure out how to get this to embed from Facebook… I liked the tri video, but as a marathoner I can appreciate this one more!

“How far did you run?”
“Just 15 miles today.  My long run is not until Saturday.”

I See Lots Of Runs In My Future

Yeah, my 3 year old certainly doesn’t need to eat all of this candy. Neither do I, but I’ll eat my fair share (no use saying I won’t…). Guess who’s going to go for many runs soon to work it off?

This Is Me

I stole this picture from Heather at Run Faster, Mommy! I’m pretty sure that when I have some extra money laying around I’ll get it made into a t-shirt. My family and friends love me, but this is usually how our conversations go!

How Far Will I Have To Drive?

It’s only playing for 1 day in the States (1 January 2011). If any one is in Washington and lives north of Seattle – the closer to the border the better – please request that they bring it to your city! I want to come! This relay is definitely going on my “someday when I don’t have kids at home” list!

Three Things Thursday

#1. I have run 3 times this week! Yay me! It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but two of these runs have been just me and Spud. This is the first time (ever) that I’ve gone out with him in the stroller and not had Colin with us. I kind of thought that it would be really hard to push the stroller just by myself, but it’s not that bad. Colin can’t do it anymore anyways since it hurts his knee so I might as well get used to doing it!

#2. I went for an 11km run yesterday. I asked Spud if he was okay to not go out on a run. And in his honest 3 year old way he said, “No.” So out we went. I’m glad that we did – it was sunny (today is not) and he had a bit of a nap.

#3. The downside to #2 is that when we got home from our run Spud was really tired and complaining of a headache. He also said that he wasn’t hungry/full even though he’d barely eaten. I kind of shrugged it off (stupid!) and paid for it later. I thought maybe he just needed to sleep a little longer, but he was actually sick. He got sick all over our couch/floor/Colin right before we were supposed to sit down for dinner. So dinner got pushed back (chicken was still on turned off barbecue – worst dinner ever 1/2 hour later) while we cleaned up. We had to rinse our cushions in the tub so I had to bathe Spud in the kitchen sink. It made for a very interesting evening and a long night (he wanted to sleep on the couch at 1am – fine, whatever’s easiest – and eat at 2am). There will be no run today!

Randomness…

A. Sometimes the whole concept of social media kind of freaks me out. I commented on a question Nathan Hydration posted on facebook today (since I already won a handheld I doubt that I’ll win a belt, but I digress). All well and good except that out of about a dozen comments I saw that two were by other runner bloggers. And they were under their real names so what I recognized was their pictures/first names. It makes the world seem like a very small place.*

B. You know you’re a runner when:
  • Joining Marathon Maniacs seems like a good idea.
  • You think that running 2 marathons in 2 days seems like an okay way to get the membership. Not the easiest, but maybe feasible?
  • You’d be willing to run 2 in 2 days if you had the money.
  • You are trying to figure out how to get said money…
  • You ask if anyone wants to fund your quest (hehe) – any one crazy enough for 1 May in Vancouver and 2 May in Eugene? The first run would be a PR, but the second almost a certain PW! That’s a long drive…
I’m not that serious about the above list (unless someone really does want to pay!)… it’ll go on my bucket list. I’ll just aim for a new PR.

* It’s definitely one of the reasons all my privacy settings are up to date!

Three Things Thursday

1. I AM A MARATHONER!!!

2. I think that I’ve 95% convinced Colin to let me sign up for the next marathon clinic. It starts in December and means I would be running the Vancouver Marathon on 1 May 2011. I just have to a) get my act together about running with Spudsy (yes, that is what M’s new online nickname is) in the stroller and/or b) find a running partner for runs that will occur in the dark.

3. I will have my race report up tomorrow if it kills me.

Good News!

After 3 weeks of not being able to run more than 5km at a time, Colin went for a 10km run tonight! Yay! If only we’d known the Nike open patella knee sleeve would help so much we could have bought it earlier… maybe he would have taken water with him tonight if he had known too. It’s not a total solution, but I’m very happy that it works and proud of him for keeping at it. He’s got an ART (Active Response Therapy) appointment on Thursday that will hopefully help some more.

Countdown is in full-swing now: only 27 more days til race day. That’s 3 long runs, people!

How do you relieve stress?

Some people exercise to relieve stress. Others bake. This is what happens when a runner comes to the conclusion that IT issues might sideline them 6 weeks before their first marathon. The runner isn’t me, but my husband… you didn’t think I could bake like this did you?*

Peanut Butter Cookies, Snails, Banana Bread, Blackberry Pie

* My only contribution was the little pile of Snails (pie dough/cinnamon sugar swirls).

Barney Stinson: How To Run A Marathon

I love How I Met Your Mother and totally forgot about this episode:

If only it was that simple!
Thanks to Courtney at Run, Courtney, Run for posting this a couple of days ago… I’ve shamelessly ripped off her post!

Today is gonna be the day…

…that I start training for a marathon. The first thing I thought of when I typed that was Oasis’ “Wonderwall” – sing it in your head if you remember it, it works! Then I thought about how old that made me since it came out 15 (!) years ago… Anyways, that’s the news of the day. I’ll do another post tonight or tomorrow recapping my first day feelings… until then here are the things that make my feet happy and a couple of “wants” for down the road:

Asics GT-2140: Loved these shoes, especially this colour. Was very disappointed when I had to replace them with the ones below. Same shoe, but the navy/pink combo make me feel like I have old-lady shoes on.

Asics GT-2140: current pair – trying mightily to give up the ghost. I can’t afford to buy new ones yet so will wear them until my knees tell me otherwise. Not the greatest choice, but there it is.

Injinji Micro Toesocks: LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I’ve never had a blister from these socks. And I’m wearing them right now.

Asics GT-2150: Upgraded model of the ones I have now. Will be getting these next. I was hoping to wait until August to get them cheap at work (in this colour too), but if I have to buy them sooner I’ll definitely get the turquoise blue ones.

Injinji Ex-Celerator Compression Toesocks: I figure that if I want a compression sock – and I’m pretty sure I’ll need them once I’m running 32km training runs – I might as well go with the ones I already like.

My Marathon Changed Its Name…

While checking facebook today I noticed that the race I am planning on running for my first marathon has aquired a title sponsor. While I understand that sponsorship is good – more money = better race and better for their charity partners – it still disappoints me. I was really excited to run at the Royal Victoria Marathon. The GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon? Not so much.
